We left Marco Valerio in the act of leaving Constantinople, embittered by the sumptuous and corrupt court of the East, disillusioned by his hopeless history with his empress, and essentially driven by nostalgia for a fallen west that is still his home. Marco therefore returns to the West, where he will strive to contribute to an unlikely rebirth. He sees the revival in a refoundation of the Western empire, as has happened several times in the past under leaders such as Vespasian, Septimius Severus or Constantine, and soon sees in very young king of the Franks, Clovis, a figure potentially capable of assuming that role. In reality, the world has changed profoundly since the times of Marco's heroes, and although Clovis will not disappoint his expectations, the West that he will help to forge with him will be very different from what he had imagined.
